I plan on getting in a nice long nap after eating supper. I need it. I also plan on working on that lovely boucle afghan. A nice lazy day to begin this year with. :)

May this new year bring you all many blessings!
Glad the old year is gone.
Paid the court fine and surcharge in full.
Starting new year with one less bill, as the fine is gone.

Yesterday was super busy for me. I had too much to do and little time to get it all done in so I didn't get a chance to make a post I got out of work at 6p.m. and rested in front of the TV downstairs that his mother watches. She's in NYC for the weekend so I can watch TV this weekend in between cleaning out the fridge, getting the kitchen squared away, doing laundry and all kinds of happy fun stuff.

At some point today I will have to run to the store, one that's open, and pick up a pack of smokes. Other than that I have nothing else planned.

Happy global hangover day folks. If you are down with one, hope you feel better soon.

I will post the stats later one. Time to catch up a bit.

BTW- I went to bed at 11:30 last night. I don't do new years. To me it's just a day off work, and time to change the calendar on the fridge. I did pop in to the tv show about it. I saw a very aged Dick Clark who looked like he needed to be in the nursing home in his bed instead of out there in the melee'. It was at that point I shut the TV off and crawled into my bed.
Happy 2010! Best wishes to one and all.

Each year I revisit this quote. I think it is worth repeating...

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.

Trouble no one about their religion;
respect others in their view,
and demand that they respect yours.

Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.

Seek to make your life long
and its purpose in the service of your people.

Prepare a noble death song
for the day when you go over the great divide.

Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing
a friend, even a stranger, when in a lonely place.

Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food
and for the joy of living;
if you see no reason for giving thanks,
the fault lies only in yourself.

Abuse no one and no thing,
for abuse turns the wise ones to fools
and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die,
be not like those whose hearts are filled with the fear
of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray
for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different
way; sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

- attributed to Tecumseh (1768?-1813), Shawnee Nation

(Note: The historian in me demanded that I add this footnote, just FYI. While researching and writing this I failed to find an adequate source for the above quote, so I suspect it has been enhanced and adjusted over the years, and might not even have originated with him at all. The sentiments, however, fit quite well with more verifiable statements and speeches made by Tecumseh.)

2009

I've been posting and reading a lot on the chow site this year and have become a regular florida chowhound on the chowhound florida boards. There are some very knowledgable Foodies on the site. One such helpful and knowledgable person is Bob Mervine. I have used a lot of his reviews, advice and comments to guide my way around the florida food scene. He seems pretty elusive and I always wished he would reply to my post, but he never did.

I read a post today and in the post was something that shocked me. It read:

"A few years ago, Bob Mervine was kind enough to answer my post and gave some great suggestions. His lost is deeply felt, I know, by all foodies."

What?! I didn't know he had passed away so I dug around a bit and realized he passed away in 2007. I had been reading old post that are still relevent from back in 2007. Often times old post get dug up when others have new information or just to agree or disagree with the information provided so while it may be at the top of the list, his post were all from 2007 and past. No wonder he never replied to my post, and here I was thinking that perhaps my post were not interesting enough for him to comment on. lol.

It just made me realize that in this age everything we do here in social communities still exist after we pass on. Certainly interesting that I have been taking food advice from a dead man all year.

and no one said anything when I would rely to bob on the boards, they must have just thought I was putting in my two cents but I was actually replying to him. hah.

Rest in Peace Bob, I'll still continue to read you and take your advice

holiday wrap-up

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
We had a great time in Seattle over Christmas. Our trip to the Bellevue Botanical gardens on Christmas eve eve was amazing. Once we got there, that is - Mom drove, and there was a lot of traffic.  It was crystal clear ( hooray!) and cold, and crowded, but definitely worth the trip. My point-and-shoot only does so-so at night, but here's what I got:
It's hard to imagine so many lights - something like half a million! This little vineyard with all the sunflowers was cute:
Aidan   commandeered  Richard's hat and wouldn't give it back . A couple of gratuitous cute shots:

And one more of him and Lauri wrapped in the quilt I made for him. Before taking Lauri and Aidan to the airport on Christmas Eve, we had breakfast at Justin's restaurant.
As is becoming a tradition, we went to Justin & Megan's for Christmas Eve dinner. He made an incredible meal of braised lamb shanks and mashed root vegetables. It is a wonderful thing to hang out with your kids, all grown up and stuff.
Christmas day was the huge gathering of all the family at Moms, complete with prime rib and of course way too much food. We got to meet Ryan's girlfriend and spend time with them after most everyone had left. The highlight of all the present commotion was the opening of the six large bed-sized quilts that mom made for each of her grandchildren this year. She actually made seven, but one was sent off to [info]truncated_ashes in CA ( these were in addition to several charity quilts!). I know how hard I worked on just the four that I made, and I am all sorts of impressed.

Now the task at hand is getting ready for the arrival of Richard six ( grandson ). We have just a couple of weeks to get things in order. Our days are now busy reorganizing and cleaning out the den and storage area in the garage. Our plan is to finally get the den in shape to use as a guest room and computer room. So far there is a huge and growing pile building of stuff to go away. I'm still wishing I had a cabinet or something so that all of my glassware and china and pretty things had a place to live other than packed away in boxes. In time.

There is a ton of sewing that is beckoning, but it will have to wait for a bit. foo. Until I can get in there to spend some time, I'll be starting new lists - ideas, things to make, projects to start and to finish, what to sell, etc.

Good thing a new year is starting - I've about used this one up. Last thing on the list for this year - go and see the huge surf today. With the Blue moon, super high tide - over 10' and a huge swell happening, it should be spectacular.  Then, we'll be off to the neighbor's for a evening celebration. Wheee!

I wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year, or a good one at least. Don't put yourself under pressure with resolutions or else. If you can do something and want to do it, just do it. Think of yourself first, there's no shame for that.

Whatever you do during New Year's Eve doesn't matter, whether you are alone or with someone, enjoy yourself like a kid would do. Say goodbye to 2009 and say welcome to 2010. ^^ Just like when you cross a road sign saying you are leaving this place and entering this one. ^_^
I love simple joys!!! :-D

You take care everybody! And from Belgium, I wish you a Happy New Year, et une Bonne Année in french!! ;-D

See you all later!

New Year's Eve plans

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
So tonight I will be going with some friends to other friends we know. This will be a group of Christians so no drinking. Praise God!
We plan to leave at about 9 and get there at about 20 or so after 9.
I am trying to reach another friend of mine to find out if she wants to go too but her line is busy.
Nothing much else to mention. I need to go over and pay the rent sometime today or tomorrow.

Saturday I am going to try to donate blood again but that's beginning to look kind of "iffy" too as I haven't been feeling the greatest.
Also really haven't been eating all that well like I should. :(

Found out today that I now have to wait until the 19th to go in and volunteer again. The reason being is they are doing some moving and remodeling, etc. The office(s) won't be ready until then.
So anyway.....
I haven't made any New Year's Resolutions and I don't plan to.
To be honest, I realize I most likely won't follow through.
Also I am not really hopeful that this year will be any better than last. If anything I have a bad feeling it will be worse. I know I shouldn't be so pessimistic but that's just how I feel.
I knew 2009 wasn't going to be good once B.O. got elected to be president! He's already gotten this country really screwed up! :(
I just hope enough people wake up and he doesn't get re-elected. And that whoever does get elected in 2012 can undo the damage. I fear he may screw things up beyond repair.

Well I sure am a "Ray of Sunshine" aren't I???
Sorry.
As guilty pleasures do, I have to admit I like snarky, self-absorbed memoirs & essay collections. For Valentine's Day one year, Shappy got me "Hollywood Animal" by (Basic Instinct and Showgirls screenwriter) Joe Eszterhaus and it was like one of the best Valentine's gifts of all time. I love the shit out of the book, and all the bat-shit craziness there within. That guy LOVES himself, and it's awesome.

But when you try to keep an organized library (tough, considering what bibliophiles Shap and I are -- we have bookshelves in EVERY room in our rinky-dink apartment), I always think it's interesting when you accidentally discover you have everything by a certain writer or artist.

I feel like this happens with music-lovers more -- where they are like, "Oh, I'm not a big fan of Beck," and yet they somehow own every single Beck album. Like, how did that happen if you aren't a big fan?

Well, this morning I discovered that Shap and I own every non-fiction book written by four-eyed, muppety, snark machine Chuck Klosterman:

title or description

We don't own his novel, Downtown Owl, so we aren't technically Klosterman completists, but we do own Fargo Rock City: A Heavy Metal Odyssey in Rural Nörth Daköta (2001), Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto (2003), Killing Yourself to Live: 85% of a True Story (2005), Chuck Klosterman IV: A Decade of Curious People and Dangerous Ideas (2006) and his most recent collection, Eating the Dinosaur (2009).

Now there is a very simple explanation for this that doesn't really attest to the quality of Klosterman's writing. We catsit near a totally awesome book store in Greenwich Village which is actually called Unoppressive Non-Imperialist Bargain Books. And they don't lie! They are a totally laidback bookstore with super SUPER cheap brand-new books (like $5 for hardbacks, including tax!), and guess what is ALWAYS on sale? Fucking Chuck Klosterman!

And as most people know, if there is a book I haven't read in the house, I will read it. No matter how much I don't care about the subject matter, or how much I hate the writing, I will eventually breakdown and read it. I am that kind of girl. I have read so many books about the rockband KISS at this point that it's embarassing -- thanks for collecting those "for Mike Henry," Shap!

I've always been a bit ambivilant about Chuck Klosterman, thinking that this middle three books were okay -- with some really smart bits and some really easy bits sort of sloppily tossed together. But since realizing that I now own all of his non-fiction books, I thinking maybe it's time I should really reasses!

So now I will say it: I really really like Chuck Klosterman's first book, Fargo Rock City and I have to admit I'm really digging his latest book, Eating the Dinosaur.

In the first one, he took a big risk by being a working & respected (albeit snarky) rock journalist who actually devotes his entire first book to explaining why heavy metal -- and in particular 80s heavy metal -- should be more respected as a real and impactful artform. I mean, imagine being a snarky guy and that you sincerely open yourself up to THAT as your thesis. And he presents his case really well, and couches his opinions in a lot of interesting facts and really personal stories of his childhood growing up. So I mean it when I say that I think Fargo Rock City is a really good book!

His latest, Eating the Dinosaurs is yet another collection of essays that aren't tied together by anything, but unlike his previous collections, I think he worked really hard to raise the bar for himself. The points he makes -- tying together really obscure figures, or juxtaposing really odd events -- are solid, and often time though provoking. In his first essay, about what "truth" means when you are interviewing people he soliciting absolutely fantastic opinions from This American Life's Ira Glass and god-like documentarian Errol Morris. The book is worth it for that alone.

Anyway, I'm not sure why I thought to write about this today, except that I'm here at work and it's sloooooooow as hell. Also, I like talking about writers and writing. But there you.

Also, I pose the question back to you: Are any of you "accidental completists" of artist you only kind of care about... or at least, thought you only kind of cared about?
Why I always, always, always have to do things at the very last moment, is beyond me. Even after all these many years. But, I did it. The grant papers are in and at the last minute. Thankfully, Tim is delivering them to the SFAC, and we did an amazing audio tape of the piece (Exile...). I really have to get organized. Some of my papers are, really and truly, but so much more needs to be done. So, there we have a task for the new year and the new decade!

There are many more, the usual suspects, so - I will have at it again. I'm just thankful to be here, alive and healthy and still in the game.

So, Happy New Year and Happy New Decade and Happy Blue Moon!
